According to al-Umq al-Arabi website, there are some 12,300 Maktabs offering Quranic courses in the North African country.

Most of them are located in rural areas and some hold their courses in mosques.

The number of Quran experts teaching at these Maktabs exceeds 14,000 and most of them are chosen from among imams of mosques.

This is according to Moroccan Awqaf Minister Ahmed Toufiq, addressing a session of the parliament.

He said the ministry has recently exempted Quranic Maktabs that are based in mosques from obtaining permission for teaching Quran memorization.

Toufiq added that 13.2 million Moroccan dirhams have been allocated for rewarding Quran memorizers who learn the Quran by heart at Maktabs as well as supervisors of the Quranic courses held in Maktabs.

He said the ministry has also introduced a series of regulations for management of Maktabs.
