SRINAGAR (IQNA) – After years under house confinement, India releases a leading Kashmiri Muslim preacher.

Omar Farooq

After four years of house confinement, Indian authorities freed Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a prominent Muslim cleric, and permitted him to preside over Friday prayers in Srinagar, the capital of Indian-run Kashmir.

He was detained ahead of India revoking Kashmir's special status in 2019 and throwing the Himalayan territory into political uncertainty.

The release of the Mirwaiz, who heads various religious organisations and is the chairman of the pro-independence Hurriyat Conference, comes days after he moved the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.

As he addressed the crowd from the pulpit of Srinagar's iconic mosque, the 50-year-old Mirwaiz cried. When the pro-freedom leader gave his first Friday sermon as a free man after four years of house imprisonment, many of people also sobbed.

Mirwaiz's release came a few days after the government freed two well-known religious leaders, Moulana Mushtaq Veeri and Moulana Dawoodi who had been imprisoned under the harsh Public Safety Act, which permits incarceration without charge for up to six months.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq is a prominent religious and political leader in the Kashmir Valley, which is a region in the northern part of the Indian subcontinent.

Mirwaiz has played a significant role in the politics and religious affairs of Kashmir, particularly in advocating for the rights of Kashmiri Muslims and seeking a peaceful resolution to the long-standing conflict in the region.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had been under house arrest for over 4 years. The government's decision to detain him had caused outrage among the local population and garnered international attention.

The valley, known for its picturesque landscapes, had been marred by violence and strife for generations. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had always been an advocate for dialogue and peaceful resolution.

As the news of his impending release spread through the region, there was a palpable sense of anticipation and hope. People from all walks of life, irrespective of their political beliefs, yearned for peace in the valley. They saw Mirwaiz Umar Farooq as the voice of reason, a beacon of hope for a better future.

The day of his release finally arrived. The world watched as the gates to his house were opened, and he stepped out into the warm sunlight. It was a moment of great significance, not just for Kashmir but for the entire world. His release was seen as a small but essential step towards resolving the longstanding conflict.

The regional mainstream political party National Conference’s leader Omar Abdullah ‘welcomed’ the step, adding that he hoped the Jammu and Kashmir administration will “allow him (Mirwaiz Umar) to move freely, interact with people and resume his social/religious responsibilities.”

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq wasted no time in reaching out to the historic grand mosque of Srinagar known as “Jamia Masjid” where he delivered the Friday sermon after missing almost 212 Friday prayers.

Mirwaiz’s message was clear: peace was the only way forward. He called for an end to violence and the initiation of a meaningful peace process through dialogue.

The people of Kashmir, tired of living in the shadow of conflict, rallied behind Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. They organized peaceful protests, demanding an end to the violence and the beginning of a new era of dialogue and reconciliation. International leaders, too, took notice of the renewed hope in the region and offered their support for the peace efforts.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq's release had not only changed the trajectory of events in Kashmir but had also sent a powerful message to the world. It showed that even in the most protracted conflicts, the power of dialogue and the resilience of the human spirit could prevail over violence and hatred.

While there were still challenges and obstacles on the path to lasting peace, the release of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had been a turning point. His unwavering commitment to peace had inspired a generation, and his legacy lived on as a symbol of hope for a brighter and more peaceful Kashmir.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq's release is seen as a crucial step towards de-escalating tensions in the region and fostering an atmosphere conducive to dialogue and reconciliation.

While challenges remain on the path to lasting peace, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq's release is viewed as a turning point in the quest for stability in Kashmir. The hope is that his unwavering commitment to peace will inspire positive change in the region and pave the way for a more peaceful and prosperous future for Kashmir and its people.

As the world watches, Kashmir stands at a crossroads, with the release of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq symbolizing a glimmer of hope in a region long marred by conflict.
