TEHRAN (IQNA) – Experts on bomb disposal have conducted a controlled explosion on a suspicious package at Edinburgh Central mosque in Scotland.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman thanked the public for their patience and said: “It has been established that the item posed no risk to the public and was innocent in nature.”

Nicolson Square has now been reopened to pedestrians and traffic.

The alarm was raised at the mosque in the city's Newington at about 09:30 on Tuesday.

“Police were called to a report of a suspicious item found within a mosque on Potterrow, Edinburgh,” a Police Scotland representative said on Tuesday.

"A cordon has been put in place as a precaution and the EOD [explosive ordnance disposal squad] are in attendance."

The mosque's Facebook page carried a post on Tuesday saying: “Edinburgh Central Mosque will be closed today for the next few hours and until further notice.

“The police have been notified about the bags and following a review of CCTV they have advised that we evacuate the building and stop any activities until they have removed the bags.
