TEHRAN (IQNA) – A Yemeni security source said the al-Qaeda terrorist group intends to flatten mosques and religious sites in the historic city of Al Mukalla.

He said the terrorist group, which is now in control of the port city in Yemen’s Hadhramaut coastal region has already shut down a number of mosques, holy shrines and historic sites and is said to be going to demolish them, Eram News reported.

The al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), the Yemen-based branch of the terror group, has been funded and armed by the Saudi regime in a bid to help it fight against the Ansarullah fighters of the Houthi movement.

Meanwhile, Saudi airstrikes against the Yemeni people continues unabated.

On March 26, the Saudi regime started its aggression against the impoverished Arab country with an aim to bring back to power Yemen’s fugitive former president, Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

The Saudi attacks have so far claimed the lives of over 2,000 people, including tens of children and women, and wounded 8,000 others, according to the United Nations.
