TEHRAN (IQNA) – Stoking fresh religious controversy in the Indian subcontinent, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) passed on Saturday, October 31, a resolution urging the government to “reformulate" India's population policy and curb what it called "demographic imbalance."

“The share of population of religions of Bharatiya origin has slipped from 88 percent to 83.5 percent between 1951-2011 censuses while Muslim population has increased from 9.8 percent to 14.23 percent in the intervening period,” read the resolution cited by Hindustan Times.

RSS leaders passed the resolution during the three-day national executive, the Akhil Bhartiya Karyakari Mandal, in Jharkhand’s capital.

The Hindutva organization claimed that the reason behind the higher growth in religious groups, like Muslims and Christians, is “infiltration” and “conversion”.

Furthermore, RSS warned that religious imbalance of the population ratio “jeopardizes” the unity, integrity and Hindu identity in border areas.

"The rate of growth of Muslim population has been higher than the national average in the border districts of border states like Assam, West Bengal and Bihar, clearly indicating the unabated infiltration from Bangladesh," the resolution claimed, International Business Times reported.

It also added that: Infiltrators are "becoming a heavy burden on the already scant resources, apart from creating socio-cultural, political and economic tensions."

There are some 180 million Muslims in Hindu-majority India, the world's third-largest Muslim population after those of Indonesia and Pakistan.

Christians Too

Meanwhile, Indian Christians were also blamed for the decrease of the population of people of Bharatiya origin from "99.21 percent in 1951 to 81.3 percent in 2001 and 67 percent in 2011."

"In just one decade, Christian population in the state (Arunachal Pradesh) has grown by almost 13 percentage points," RSS claimed.

"These examples and pointers of unnatural growth of Christian population in many districts of the nation indicate an organized and targeted religious conversion by some vested interests.”

Aiming to curb the growth of Indian religious minorities’ populations, RSS asked the government to completely restrain illegal infiltration from the other side of the border, and "prepare a national register of citizens and prevent these infiltrators from acquiring citizenship rights and purchasing lands,” the resolution read.

It also called for imposing a “uniform” population policy for all Indian communities.

"If religion prevents one from opting for family planning norms, we must go by the nationalist spirit and formulate a policy keeping under consideration available resources of the country,” RSS joint general secretary Krishna Gopal was quoted by the Times of India.

Last April, a leader of Hindu Mahasabha said that Indian Muslims and Christians should forcibly undergo sterilization to curb their fast growing population.

Sadhvi Deva Thakur, the vice-president of All India Hindu Mahasabha, claimed the increasing number of religious minorities poses a threat to Hindus.

She also called on Hindus to increase their populations by having more children.
