A group of extremist Buddhists in Myanmar have set fire to a mosque dating back to over 2 centuries ago.

They attacked the mosque on Saturday night, November 23, in yet another anti-Islamic move in the predominantly Buddhist country, trouvetamosquee website reported.

The gang of Buddhist radicals had failed to set Muslims’ stores on fire on Saturday morning, prevented from doing so by security forces.

On their way back, the group decided to destroy the old mosque and did so by burning the place of worship.

The mosque was built in 1810 and had been in need of repair for a long time. Muslims who had been asking government permission for repairing the mosque were denied permission.

Violence against Muslims in Myanmar has risen sharply in the past few years. The violence that originally targeted Rohingya Muslims in western Myanmar has spread to other parts of the country.

Extremists Buddhists frequently attack Muslims and have set fire to their homes in several villages in different parts of the country. Myanmar’s government has been accused of failing to protect the Muslim minority.
