TEHRAN (IQNA) – A Tunisian memorizer of the Quran said Quran competitions are helpful in promoting the teachings of the Holy Book.

Speaking to IQNA, Aiman Ahmed Shukri Ibrahim, who represented the Arab country in the 6th International Quran Competition for Muslim Students, said such contests encourage teenagers and the youth to learn the Quran and get acquainted with its teachings.

Aiman said that in Tunisia, various Quranic programs, including competitions, are held at different levels.

He noted that the National Quran Association and the Ministry of Religious Affairs are the two bodies responsible for holding Quranic programs in the country.

In addition to Quranic activities organized for people in general, he said, there are competitions, recitation sessions and Quranic programs for students at universities and higher education centers.

“This year, for instance, there was a special Quran contest for students organized by the University of Ez-Zitouna (in Tunis).”

Asked about his path to becoming a memorizer, Aiman said he started learning the Quran by heart at the age of 6.

“I managed to memorize the entire Quran at the age of 12,” he said, noting that he is now a student of Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) at the University of Ez-Zitouna.

Aiman said that he is also a reciter of the Quran and that his role model in recitation is prominent Egyptian Qari Sheikh Mahmoud Khalil Hasri.

The 6th International Quran Competition for Muslim Students was held in Iran’s northeastern holy city of Mashhad on April 27-29.

This edition of the contest saw the participation of 44 Quran activists, 19 Qaris and 25 memorizers from 35 countries.

Tunisia is a North African country bordering the Mediterranean Sea and Sahara Desert.

Islam is the official state religion in Tunisia. Approximately 99 percent of the population of the country is Muslim.
