In an interview with IQNA, Iraqi political analyst and managing director of the Arab country’s al-Nakheel news agency Muhammad Ali al-Hakim stressed that Ayatollah Rafsanjani was a great supporter of the resistance movement in the region.

He added that the late cleric was an adherent of invitation to unity in the Muslim world and always urged proximity among Islamic schools of thought.

Al-Hakim also said Ayatollah Rafsanjani was an influential figure in regional equations and drawing Iran’s political path.

He further referred to the late cleric’s role in the Islamic Revolution of Iran, noting that he contributed to the Islamic movement led by Imam Khomeini (RA) since the very beginning of the movement.

In addition to being an experienced political leader, Ayatollah Rafsanjani was a religious thinker and a free-thinking man and these characteristics made him a unique character, the Iraqi figure went on to say.

Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani, Iran’s former president and chairman of the Expediency Council, died on January 8 at the age of 82.

He was an influential figure in a campaign led by Imam Khomeini that resulted in the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

The deceased became president for two terms and was the chairman of the Expediency Council for some 20 years.

In a message of condolence on January 8, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei described him as "an old friend and ally of the era of Islamic Movement and a close colleague during the Islamic Republic era.”

Pointing to his 59 years of friendship and cooperation with Rafsanjani, the Leader said losing such an old colleague would be "hard and heart-rending”.

"His great intelligence and unique sincerity in those years were a source of confidence for colleagues, and for me in particular,” Ayatollah Khamenei underscored.
