Participation in I’tikaf Ceremonies Rises by 80%

TEHRAN (IQNA) – Number of particpants in I’tikaf (religious retreat) rituals in different countries saw an 80-percent increase this year, an Al-Mustafa University official said.


Hojat-ol-Islam Hossein Moradi Dolatabadi, director general of the university’s cultural department, told IQNA that I’tikaf ceremonies were held in India, Tajikistan, Mali, Germany (especially Hamburg), Norway and several other countries more gloriously than previous years.

He also noted that Albania, the Philippines, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Russia, Thailand, Lebanon and Britain have also joined the countries hosting the ceremonies in recent years.

I’tikaf is a form of worship performed by staying in a mosque for a certain time. It is a tradition which has been in Islam from the first days of the Revelation.

Hojat-ol-Islam Moradi Dolatabadi underlined that the religious ritual can play a major role in proximity of Islamic schools of thought as it is common among all Muslim sects.

He further called on the media to spread awareness in society about the importance and functions of I’tikaf.
